06-Engineering Achievments
Aug 27–Before class, read section 1, Electrification, at the National Academy of Engineering’s Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century website at http://www.greatachievements.org/. Also look at Invention Stories from the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at
http://invention.smithsonian.org/resources/default_index.aspx
Write several paragraphs on what you consider the most important engineering achievements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Make sure to check the boxes on the posting page for your first name and last initial so your posts will appear on person links on the right hand side of the page. After you have posted your entry, read and respond to at least two other students’ entries using the comment function. Discuss in detail whether you agree with your fellow students’ choices for the most important engineering achievements and why. You will begin working on your posting and responses in class; everything should be up in finished form this Friday by 5pm.
Make sure you cover the following in you comment: 1) whether you agree or disagree with the claim about the importance of the processes, devices or structures chosen; 2) whether there are any parts of the description (of the device and how it worked) and the need it met that you have trouble following; and 3) whether you can think of anything the author might add.
When posting, do not use the Leave a Reply box below but the New Post link in the blue area at the top of the page. Also remember to check Achievments (under Assignments) and your name (under People) in the category boxes to the right of the posting area.
