Lineman’s Death – Heera J

December 1, 2008

Dear Editor:

My condolences to the lineman’s death. It is tragic that he died in the work of AC but that should not be a reason to have AC completely shut down. If you look at it DC has also had a lot of death from electrocution and that’s why AC became famous. Electricity is a growing industry. It is still in its young ages so obviously there would be some mistakes in it. To shut down AC is like trying to shout down electricity itself. This is doing injusitice to the poor people. The AC is cheaper for many to buy and that’s why so many people use it. It should be up to the public to decide on this.

16 B Edison Capital Punishment – Heera J

November 19, 2008

Edison’s position on electrocution is very unethical. He tried to save his business by saying that AC was dangerous and to prove his point he electrocuted animals. The animals that he bought of little kids on the street were victims to Edison’s experimentation. After he used all the little animals he moved onto a horse and then later and elephant. When Edison wanted electrocution to be the capital punishment, he only thought about how to make Westinghouse look bad. He didn’t even stop for one moment to consider what the victim of the electrocution might suffer. All Edison had in mind was to take down Westinghouse. Edison would not have supported electrocution if someone close to him was to be experimented on. He wasn’t thinking of it would affect other people. It is a good thing that Edison wanted the public to be aware of the dangers in AC but the way he went about it was wrong. And even more to solidify his theory, he put a man through unexplainable pain and torture before he died. Kemler was a crazy murderer and he deserved to die but no human whether he is evil or not should be put to death through electrocution.

Brown ~ Heera J

November 17, 2008

The way Brown and Edison went about to try to dissuade people from using AC was not ethical at all.  They should have found a better way than use poor animals in the their “electrocuting experiments.” What they wanted to prove was the right way to begin but then they just killed innocent animals to prove their point. It certainly would have been better is they had used an another way to prove to the audience of the dangers of AC. anything that was technical, like the way Tesla should static electricity, would have been good. Even though this did open peoples’ eyes about the dangers of AC, it was very disgusting and cruel of Edison to use animals that he bought of little kids. even if the animals were stray, I would never except Edison’s way of proving something that was dangerous.

Tesla and AC Motors – Heera J

November 10, 2008

After Tesla thanked all his benefactors, he began to explain why the AC was better than the DC of Edison. Polyphase AC was necessary because it replaced the need for a commutator instead using a simple order of currents to provide power to the induction motor he had developed. He used one of his motors that he had to demonstrate it’s action and explained every detail involving the use of the polyphase AC and the magnetic fields used to rotate the motor. With the help of Westinghouse Tesla was able to option patens which would help further his design to make it more practical for everyday use. Tesla still at this time was viewed as a visionary and his ideas although abstract are still in use today.

Memory – Heera Jay

November 3, 2008

Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) is where a transistor and a capacitor, kind of like a battery, that are paired together to create a memory cell which reperesents a single bit of data. A bit is a binary digit taking a value of 0 or 1. The capacitor holds the bit information (a 0 or a 1) and the transistor acts as a switch that lets the control circuitry to read or change the state of the capacitor. Imagine the capacitor as like a leaky bucket. So inorder to store a 1 in the memory cell, the bucket has to full. But remember that the bucket aka the capacitor is a leaky bucket so as soon as you fill it with 1, it empties out to 0. So in order for the DRAM to work, the CPU has to comealong and recharge all the 1 before it discharges.

Delay line memory works like a ripples in a pond. The delay line memory, the information is introduced to the memory in the form of electric pulses, like the ripples in a pond. These electric pulses go through a medium that transforms the pulses into mechanical waves while going through the medium. But after it comes out of the medium it goes back to being an electric pulses.

Micron Trip – Heera Jay

November 3, 2008

The micron trip was interesting. We learned a little bit of a background about the micron center and what it does. They showed us a little about the history of the micron center and how it is a part of an everyday household appliances. They manufacture chips for Intel, Sony, Apple and many other companies. Micron is a large corporate tha has branched out to Asia and Europe.

I was really happy with this trip becasue it was too bland. I was not expecting a small, very small tour down a hallway. I thought we migh get see the inside see how things are made. I wanted actually see indepth on how they do these things. So i was extremely disappointed when all we did was walk down a hallway.

How Transformers Work

October 27, 2008

The transformer is a device that transform electricity form one voltage to another. The voltage would travel thought many coiled insulated wires. ”The greater the number of wrapped coils, the higher the voltage would rise”(130).   It only works with alternate currents because of the magnetic field created by the swift oscillations of AC electrons. Alternate Current is like a sine graph, the way it moves up and down is the reason why the transformers works. The reason why AC became famous was because the electricity could travel longer distances without any voltage being dropped.

The transformer was first created by Michael Faraday in 1831. it was just two copper wires coiled around an iron bar. “The ‘primary’ is a copper wire that is fed electric current, generating a magnetic field. The ’secondary’ is the copper wire that intercepts the primary’s field of force .” Th

Tesla Master of Lightening – Heera J

October 11, 2008

The documentary was a bit dragged out. But it was interesting to learn about Tesla. To think a genius like Edison was ignored by the world makes it sad. Tesla deserves to be know like Edison. If it were not for him both Edison and Westinghouse would not reach their fame.

I realised a lot of similarities between Edison and Tesla in this documentary. Both of them worked on their invention like their life depended on it. The barely slept in order to finish the process of finish their invention. And another thing i realsied was both of htem didn’t really have a family. Their love was invention and only invention. They both lived and breathed invention.

I felt complete pity for Tesla. I have never seen a man that achieved so much and lost tem all as well. He was used by a lot of inventors. Edison used him to make the motors for him, Westinghouse used to make AC current possible for everyone, and the radio guy used his ideas and invetion to become famous. All these people beacme famous and some even got the Noble Peace Prize for their invetion which was actually Tesla’s. And in the ed when he finally gets an award, he gets the edison medal. Is there any wayt to humilate this man like thi. I really felt that world was unfair to Tesla. He hould be recognized just like Edison and Westinghouse. I mean he did get famous eventually but not like Edison.

Heera J – Electric Nation

October 8, 2008

The documentary, Electric Nation, was as good as the other ones. Maybe its because its pretty much a repetition of what we learned from the other documentaries. But it was interesting to find the ground works they had to do in New York to get the electricity working. It was like New York was his guinea pig. First the the city next the world. I learned a little bit more in detail about the incandescent bulb. But the main goal was to bring the price down so that even the middle class would have access to it. Samuel Insull wanted to get electricity available to middle class. In order for this to happen Insull invested his own money in stocks and everything to make his dream possible. But sadly the great depression had hit by this time. With his pride and dreams lost, Insull went into isolation. When Roosevelt came into presidency he had other plans for electricity. Insull was put under trail and came out not guilty. But Roosevelt thought that it would be best if the federal government took control of electricity. Wilkie was against Roosevelt because he thought that electricity should be privately owned

Edison The Man – Heera J

September 29, 2008

I really did enjoy the movie Edison the Man. I didn’t think i was going to enjoy it because it was an old black and white movie. But nonetheless it was enjoyable. The movie portrayed Edison as a family man who loved and spent time with his wife and kids, when in reality he was a terrible father and husband. Even though he married his wife, his true love forever would be inventing things. They also added humor Edison’s dialogues which i thought was weird because i thought Edison was a very serious man.The movie was kind of like CSI in the fact that they showed his spontaneous inventions done in days or months were as it actually to years to complete it.Plus they also showed that most of Edison’s inventions were from mistakes that he came at during the experiments when in reality he had plans and ideas about it and processed it carefully. The movie did show Edison as a man who cared for his fellow scientists like his own family. This is something that’s actually true because during the war between the currents Edison tested on dogs to prove that Westinghouse was wrong. During this entire time, his fellow scientist helped without saying or advising him against it because Edison was someone who saved them and now it kind of like they were showing their gratefulness by being loyal to him.
