Tesla Master of Lightening~Desire’ B

This movie was alright, I’m just not a big fan of documentaries at all. This movie showed Tesla in a new light for me, both good and bad. I thought it was really dumb how he thought he could transport from one place to the other. And that lightening beam was way out in left field for me. I guess back in those days since electricity and energy and light was all new, that they assumed anything was possible. Towards the end of Tesla’s life I thought it was sad. How people just regarded him as a crazy old man even though he was the one that came up with polyphase AC and made the Niagara project a reality.

Tesla and Edison had some very similar characteristics in their personalities. Both of them barely ever slept. They worked non-stop on their inventions and just didn’t need sleep. Another thing that these two shared in common that wasn’t mentioned directly in the movie, but Tesla nor Edison had much of a family life. Edison might have had a wife and kids but he it was as if he didn’t have won. His inventions were his life, just like Tesla. Many women threw themselves at Tesla, but he never showed any interests in anything other than his inventions. This was an advantage for him because it caused him to focus solely on his inventions to get them complete.

The differences between these two inventors were that Edison didn’t foresee his inventions like Tesla. Tesla would have visions of his inventions, and they would just come to him. From memory he was able to produce amazing things such as the alternating current generator and finished the Niagara project. Edison, had more of a try and see if it works, and Edison drew pictures of his ideas, Tesla did not. I would think that this would be a disadvantage for Tesla because he would never have a hard copy of his ideas and his inventions. I figured that would cripple him, like if he was in the middle of building his motor he suddenly can’t recall it in his vision, he would just be out of luck. I guess these visions played to his advantage, because he became a very successful inventor until he got into his old age.

The movie Tesla Master of Lighting was about Nikola Tesla’s life.  The movie talks about how Tesla got to the top of the inventors and also about his gradual decent into poverty.  Tesla started overseas in Serbia and his vision of the AC motor is what driven him to come to America and live the American Dream.  The way Tesla worked was not normal to the standards of that time because he had visions of his inventions.  These visions came to him in dreams and they were the AC motor, wireless communication, and wireless power supply.  When he came over to America he worked for Edison until he realized that Edison was a crook because he did not pay him $50,000 as promised for improving the generators.  After this Tesla started his own company with Westinghouse only a few buildings down from Edison’s company, this is where the AC current was explored and rapidly expanded.  Tesla had the same major flaw as Edison which was stubbornness.  Tesla did not give up on the idea of wireless power supply which was time he could have been working in other important inventions.  Tesla was determined on creating inventions that would serve a purpose in war but they were rarely picked up on the battle fields.

The film Tesla Master of Lighting was about the great engineer Nikola Tesla and his journey to his fame. He is mostly known for his discovery of alternating current (AC), which rapidly grew over Edisons direct current (DC). His unique working methods allowed him to introduce the idea of wireless communication (radio). Much like Edison, he became greatly known as a very intimidating electrical inventor. The two were compared alot, and even crossed paths during their work. Tesla was born in Serbia at the stroke of midnight during an electric storm. When he was growing up he was heavily taught by his father. He later on traveled to the United States. New York City had work for him, due to a letter of recommendation to Edison from a close friend. Problems occured between to two when Tesla claimed that Edison offered him $50,000 if he improved the generators and motors. So then Tesla left Edison and started his own company a few streets down. With the help of investors and George Westinghouse, Tesla was allowed to bring alternating current to its full potential. His later years found him experimenting with the idea of wireless communication and death rays. He won a Nobel Piece Prize with Edison as well. His vision of electricity allowed him to expand his research ability to a whole different level. This is why people would compare him to Edison, as they possess the same type of qualities. Of course, it has its advantages and disadvantages. The risk is high but so is the reward. There will be many failures but the success is worth it.

Nikola Tesla was, in my opinion, the most interesting and revolutionary inventor of all time. These “epiphanies” that came to him at times when his life seemed to be on the brink of complete despair are extremely interesting. He saw visions of the alternating current motor, and the wireless transmission of frequencies. In a dream he had, he saw his mother die, and surely enough, when he awoke she had died. Tesla, in my opinion, was a prophet of technology. Tesla envisioned his inventions. He was able to get so deep into his thoughts that he barely even needed to write inventions on paper. With his lightning experiment, he did not even bother to write out the calculations, and it still produced very revolutionary results.

Tesla and Edison had very different styles of doing business. Edison preferred to stay up all hours and put all of his time towards inventing. With no advanced schooling or mentors, Edison created the wonder of capturing electricity and using it for good. Tesla however, seemed to focus a lot of his tome on creating military based devices and thought a lot about how to use this new technology for destruction. Tesla seemed to be a very anxious inventor who seemed to need someone like Edison to be inspired by. He was extremely excited to meet with Thomas Edison because of how interested he was in Edison’s work. Tesla and Edison soon became rivals, but only because of Edison’s disliking of Tesla’s  implementation of alternating current in his motor. If Edison would have accepted that the AC motor worked much better than the DC motor, the world might not have known of Tesla and his great inventions. Edison turning down Tesla is what led to the Tesla and Westinghouse alliance, which is what boosted Tesla to fame and fortune.
